Reaching My Target

Well, a couple of weeks ago I finally reached 40.

Am I happy about this? No not really, no one wants to get old, and the "old" jokes from my colleagues in the office have got "old" really fast...

So why this post?

Basically, because I had a target to be debt free, (apart from the mortgage), by then.

Did I make it?

No.

Looking back, I got very close. I was a little ahead of my target to achieve this until a couple of years ago when my son was born. It's a decent enough excuse I guess - I had to run up some debt fixing up the car, buying a seat for said car, and various other baby related paraphernalia like cots and things. I didn't have an emergency fund at the time, and neither did I understand the importance of, or benefits of such a thing. Now I know better of course.

I shouldn't have run that debt up either, but time and money were both short, and besides I had other things on my mind. So where exactly are you going with this waffling post today Matt?

Nowhere really.

Suffice to say, I feel extremely down in the doldrums, and feel like going down the pub and blowing a load of money on a drinking session, but I MUST NOT GIVE UP. I'm thinking of the future, that glorious day when I'll make my last credit card payment and sit there with a self satisfied look on my face, thinking: Job Well Done.

If I ever want to get there, I have to pick myself up and get back on that wagon.

I get a little sense of what it'll be like every time I finally polish off another debt. July 3rd 2012 is the date for the next one, and then of course, using the snowball method, I shall put that "spare" money towards a different debt and watch that go down even faster...

So now my revised target is my 42nd birthday. After all, 40 - it's just another number isn't it?

  1. Happy belated! 40 is the new 30 :0) Do you notice that each year goes by faster than the last? Or maybe it's just me.

  2. Thanks! One of my colleagues quoted this to me the other day, only she got it wrong. According to her 40 is the new 50...
And yes, everything does seem to move faster doesn't it?
